Drinking Water Education for K-12 Teachers and Students
Since drinking water protection is not a designated part of the academic curriculum in most middle and high school systems, neither students nor teachers understand how drinking water gets contaminated. To build understanding of water resources, MAWP members have begun developing a curriculum that meets Standard of Learning requirements for science and social studies courses. By working with the administration and teachers of targeted schools in Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland, this effort aims to formulate a tailor-made curriculum to increase teacher and student knowledge about water resource management, with an emphasis on the source, treatment and protection of drinking water. This effort builds on the recent success of a pilot 4-H program for middle school students in Virginia, as well as the wide variety of educational materials and information on water resources and management that are currently available, including Project WET, Healthy Water/Healthy People, Project Underground, Home*A*Syst and many others.
