Manure Markets for Regional Nutrient Balance
Estimations of regional nutrient balances show that some counties may have more nutrients available from animal manures and poultry litter than local cropland can use, suggesting that alternative means of disposing these excess wastes may need to be implemented. Manure/litter transport is a commonly utilized strategy to address nutrient excesses. State governments in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia have utilized transport subsidy programs to stimulate adoption of poultry litter by new users. The following publications assess the need for establishing manure markets and the mechanisms for transporting the wastes for use in less nutrient-saturated areas.
